The face of war

1940/41

Salvador Dali

oil on canvas.

Dali is a major influence on me.and my workThe duality of his images and his hard and soft theory captured my attention at an early age. He was an enigmatic character, who was driven by his albedo and the ever present spectre of death.

In dalis painting the "face of war" we see a head in a landscape Executed in oil on canvas, the eyes and mouth of the head contain further heads, and inside the eyes and mouthes of these contain skeletal heads. we get the impression that this process could be infinite. The heads have very expressive expressions. A mixture of worry and horror. Dali painted this as a response to the Spanish civil war. He intended this painting as a homage to Spain.

I like this painting because of its simplicity It is rendered in browns which give it a melancholic atmosphere.
